Model Yachting Lakes in the UK

In early twentieth century UK, many lakes were built specifically for the purpose of the new up and coming sport of model yachting.   In an effort to keep a record of this important part of our urban history this map is my effort to record all the lakes that can still be used for Free Sailing (Green Icon), lakes that can now only be sailed on using Radio Control (Blue Icon) and sadly those that have fallen into disrepair, unusable and worst still vanished for ever (Purple Icon).

If you would like to try your hand at free sailing but do not have a suitable lake near you one tip is to search your surrounding area with Google maps. You will be surprised what can crop up and have always found the Water Boards helpful when asking for permission. Let us know how you get on.
